চার বছরের শিশু জিয়াদ গোটা বাংলাদেশের দুবৃত্তায়নকে চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে দেখিয়ে গেল। আমরা হাজার কোটি টাকা খরচ করে ফায়ার সার্ভিস লালন পালন করি। তাদের মেধা, দক্ষতা তাহলে কোথায় গেল? দীর্ঘ ২৩ ঘণ্টা ফায়ার সার্ভিস কোটি টাকার যন্ত্র দিয়ে যা পারেনি, এক মেকানিক ফারুক তা আধাঘণ্টায় করে দেখালেন। রাজধানীর মিরপুর থেকে ঘটনাস্থলে আসা আবু বকর সিদ্দিকের বানানো খাঁচার সাহায্যেই জিহাদকে উদ্ধার করল সাধারণ জনতা। জিয়াদকে উদ্ধার নিয়ে স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী যেভাবে ফায়ার সার্ভিসকে বিভ্রান্ত করেছেন, তার দায় এখন কার?

Little four year old Jihad has exposed the deep corruption and decay endemic to Bangladesh. We spend millions of taka on our fire service. What good did their skills and brains do to Jihad? What the fire service people couldn’t achieve in 23 hours with their million taka instruments, a simple mechanic Faruk achieved within half an hour. In the end it was the common people who pulled out Jihad using the cage that Abu Bakar Siddiqui from Mirpur made. But the way the State Minister mislead the fire service, who is going to answer for that?

শিশু জিয়াদের উদ্ধার, মৃত্যু আর বাংলাদেশের প্রশাসনের ব্যর্থতা আবার জনতার কাছে দিনের আলো মত এখন পরিস্কার হল। এই রাষ্ট্র একটি দুবৃত্তায়নে এতটা এগিয়েছে যে, এখানে কেউ নিজের ব্যর্থতার দায় স্বীকার করে না। গোটা রাষ্ট্রের প্রশাসন কিভাবে চলে, তা এক জিয়াদ সবাইকে চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে দেখিয়ে গেল।

Through Jihad’s rescue and his death the utter failure of the administration of Bangladesh becomes clear as daylight. This country has progressed so far down the road of corruption that no one here admits responsibility for failure. Jihad pointed out to all of us how the administrative network of the whole country operates.

ওয়াসার একটি গভীর নলকূপের মুখ এক বছর ধরে খোলা থাকে কিভাবে? এটা একটি অমার্জনীয় অপরাধ। নতুন গভীর নলকূপ স্থাপনে প্রকল্পের ঠিকাদারী প্রতিষ্ঠান মেসার্স এস আর হাউস এই অপরাধটি এক বছর ধরে করতে পারল কোন সাহসে? এদের পেছনের শক্তির রহস্য কি?

How can the mouth of a deep WASA well remain open like this for a whole year? This is an unforgivable crime. How can Messrs. S.R. House, the business which has the contract to dig deep wells for WASA,  able to get away with this crime for a year? What is the story behind their power?

ফায়ার সার্ভিস তাহলে সারা বছর কি প্রশিক্ষণ নেয়? ওয়াসা উচ্চ মূল্যের প্রযুক্তি দিয়ে তাদের সীমাহীন ব্যর্থতা কি ঢাকতে পারল? মজার বিষয় হল, আমাদের বুয়েট আধুনিক বিজ্ঞানের উচ্চ কৌশল নিয়েও ব্যর্থ হল হাতুড়ি বিদ্যার কাছে। এক জিয়াদের দুর্ঘটনা থেকে বাংলাদেশের গোটা রাষ্ট্র ব্যবস্থার নানা অনিয়ম, অব্যবস্থাপনা, অদক্ষতা, দুবৃত্তায়ন সব ফাঁস হয়ে গেল। আর এসব সরকারি কর্মকর্তাদের বছরে বছরে বেতন বাড়ে কিভাবে? এমন হাজারো প্রশ্ন জাগিয়ে দিয়ে গেল চার বছরের জিয়াদ। দ্য পুয়োর চাইল্ড। গড ব্লেজ ইউ।

So what kind of training does the fire service get all year? Was WASA able to hide their boundless incompetence with their expensive hi-technology? Amusing to see that our BUET’s hi-tech science was beaten by homegrown technology. The whole Jihad incident exposes the various irregularities, mismanagement, incompetence and corruption of the whole state system. How is it then every year these government officials get raises? Jihad left us with thousands of questions like this one. The poor child. God bless you.

দলীয় সংকীর্ণ মনোভাবের বাইরে উঠে একবার নিজের বিবেক দিয়ে চিন্তা করে দেখুন, ছোট্ট জিয়াদ বাংলাদেশকে কি কি দিয়ে গেল? জিয়াদ দেখিয়ে দিয়ে গেল, এই রাষ্ট্র একটি চার বছরের ছোট্ট শিশুকে উদ্ধার করতে ২৩ ঘণ্টা সময় ধরে ব্যর্থ। এই রাষ্ট্র একটি ক্যামেরা অন করতে ছয় ঘণ্টা সময় নেয়। এই রাষ্ট্রের ফায়ার সার্ভিস দুর্ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছাতে দেড় ঘণ্টা লেট। এই রাষ্ট্রের স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী জনগণকে বিভ্রান্ত করেন, ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কাজের মধ্যে বাম হাত দেন। এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রাইভেট চ্যানেলগুলোর সংবাদকর্মীরা ভালো ফুটেজের জন্য উদ্ধার কাজে বিঘ্ন ঘটায়। এই রাষ্ট্রে দুর্ঘটনাস্থলকে ফিতা দিয়ে কর্ডন করা হয় না। এই রাষ্ট্রে ৩০০ বা ৬০০ বা ৮০০ ফুট গভীর একটি নলকূপের পাইপ এক বছর ধরে উন্মুক্ত থাকলেও সেটির মুখ বন্ধ করার কেউ নেই। এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রশাসন জিয়াদের দুর্ঘটনাকে গুজব বলে চালিয়ে দেবার চেষ্টা করেছে। যে কারণে জিয়াদের বাবা ও মামাকে পুলিশ সারা রাত থানা হেফাজতে আটক রেখেছে। এই রাষ্ট্র নিজেদের ব্যর্থতার দায়ভার লুকাতে ভিকটিমের পরিবারকে উল্টো নির্যাতন করায় ওস্তাদ। এই রাষ্ট্র জনগণের চোখ অন্যত্র ঘুরিয়ে দিতে নানান বাহানা করতে পারদর্শী। এই রাষ্ট্রের অনিয়মগুলো মানুষ বেশিদিন মনে রাখে না। জিয়াদের ঘটনাও এই রাষ্ট্র ভুলতে বেশি সময় নেবে না।

Rise above your narrow group affiliations and try to think with your conscience about what is tiny Jihad’s legacy for Bangladesh? Jihad showed that, this country takes 23 hours to rescue a 4 year old child. That it takes six hours for this country to turn on a [rescue] camera. That the fire service gets to the disaster site an hour and a half late. That the State Minister of this country misleads the people of the country, and meddles in the rescue operation of the fire service. That the journalists of the private channels of the country interferes with the rescue operation to get good footage. That the disaster zone wasn’t cordoned off by police tape. That in this country there is no one to cover up a gaping hole 300 ft, 600 ft or 800 ft  deep that lies exposed for a whole year. That this country tried to pass off Jihad’s accident as a rumour. Which is why the police kept Jihad’s father and maternal uncle under arrest the whole night at the station. That this country is adept at abusing the victim’s family in order to hide its own failures. That this country is expert in inventing excuses in order to divert people’s attention from the real issue. That they have short memory of these irregularities.  It won’t take too long for the state to forget Jihad’s accident.

সুন্দরবনে তেলের ট্যাংকার দুর্ঘটনাকে এই রাষ্ট্র পাত্তা দেয় না। উল্টো প্রশাসন এবং নৌমন্ত্রী, পরিবেশমন্ত্রী দাবি করেন, তেলে সুন্দরবনের কোনো ক্ষতি হবে না। এই রাষ্ট্র জিয়াদের ঘটনা ভোলার জন্য আরেকটি অঘটন ঘটিয়ে জনতার চোখকে সেদিকে নিতেও বেশি সময় লাগাবে না। এভাবে হাজার হাজার ব্যর্থতাকে পুঁজি করে এই রাষ্ট্র ৪৩ বছর পার করেছে। রামপাল কয়লা বিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্প এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রাকৃতিক রক্ষাকবজ সুন্দরবনকে ধ্বংস করবে, এটি এরা বুঝতে পারে না। গভীর নলকূপের মুখ খোলা রাখলে দুর্ঘটনা ঘটতে পারে, এই রাষ্ট্র এটা স্বীকার করে না। এই রাষ্ট্র মানুষের মানবতাকে কেয়ার করে না। কেয়ার করে প্রশাসন আর দুবৃত্তদের চৌর্যবৃত্তিকে।

This state ignores the oil tanker disaster at the Sundarbans. On the contrary the administration and the Minister of Waterways and the Minister of Environment claim that the oil spill will not harm the Sundarbans. It won’t long before this country creates another disaster to cover up the Jihad incident. In this way by capitalizing one disaster after another the governments of this country has been operating for the last 43 years. This state will never understand that the Rampal Electricity Project will destroy Sundarbans which acts as a natural barrier against many natural disasters. This country doesn’t care about humanity. They only care about the corruption of administration and criminals.

শিশু জিয়াদকে এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রশাসনিক অনিয়মই হত্যা করেছে। ছোট্ট শিশু জিয়াদ মাঠে খেলতে যাবে, এটাই স্বাভাবিক। কিন্তু সেই মাঠের ভেতর যে এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রশাসন তার জন্য মৃত্যুকূপ বানিয়ে রেখেছে, তা ওই ছোট্ট শিশুটি কিভাবে জানবে? তার তো এই দুবৃত্তদের বানানো ফাঁদ সম্পর্কে কোনো ধারণা নেই। বাবা স্কুলের নৈশপ্রহরী। জাতে গরীব। তাই প্রশাসন ছেলে হারানোর দুঃখের মধ্যেও জিয়াদের বাবা ও মামাকে থানায় আটক রেখেছে সারারাত। গুজবকে বিশ্বাস করানোর জন্য এই যে প্রশাসনের অকৃত্তিম প্রচেষ্টা, এটাকে এখন মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী কিভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করবেন?

It was the irregularities of this country’s administration which killed the child Jihad. That Jihad will go and play in the field is natural. That the administration of this country has sprung death traps in that playing field, how was this little child to know that? He has no idea about the traps that the criminals have set. Jihad’s father is a simple night guard. From a poor class. That is why the administration could lock up Jihad’s father and maternal uncle all night to add insult to their injury! How will the honourable Prime Minister explain how her administration tried its best to convince the people of false rumours?

গোটা রাষ্ট্রের চেষ্টা যেখানে ব্যর্থ, হাতুড়িবিদ্যায় পারদর্শী সাধারণ জনতাই মাত্র আধাঘণ্টায় জিয়াদকে উদ্ধার করে আবার প্রমাণ করে দিল, জনতাই সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি। জনতার ইচ্ছার চেয়ে বড় কিছু নেই।

Where the whole state machinery failed, a few expert tinkerers from the common people proved, by rescuing Jihad in a matter of half an hour, that the people are the real power. That there is nothing greater than the power of the people.

আমাদের প্রশাসন যে কি খায়, কোন বাতাসে চলে, কার ইসারায় কি রটিয়ে দেয়, এটাই এই রাষ্ট্রের জন্য এখন সবচেয়ে বড় মৃত্যুকূপ। এক শিশু জিয়াদ দুর্ঘটনায় পড়ে এই রাষ্ট্রের প্রশাসন, সরকার, রাজনীতি, মিডিয়া, রাষ্ট্রের কাণ্ডজ্ঞান, মন্ত্রীদের মুর্খামী, অনেকগুলো বিষয়ের উপর দিনের আলোর মত প্রশ্নবোধক চিন্থ রেখে গেল। তারপর কি হবে? কিছুই হবে না। কারণ, এই রাষ্ট্র এভাবেই অভ্যস্থ হয়ে গেছে। দুবৃত্তায়নকে যে লালন করে, অনিয়মকে যারা মাথায় হাত বুলায়, ব্যর্থতাকে যারা পুঁজি করে অলৌকিক গুজব দিয়ে, ধর্মকে যারা ব্যবহার করে মানুষের চেতনাকে কাবু করার কাজে, সেই রাষ্ট্রে একজন জিয়াদের জন্ম নেওয়াই ছিল পাপ।

What is our administration fed on, which air do they breath, whose instructions do they follow? These are the death traps to our country. One Jihad, by falling victim to this accident, raised some questions about this country’s administration, government, politics, media, the lack of institutional common sense, the ignorance of our ministers. But what will happen in the end? Nothing. Because this country is used to this way of being. It was Jihad’s sin to be born in a country in which corruption is cultivated, irregularity is indulged in, failure is used as an excuse to spread rumours, religion is used to control the conscience of the people.

আজ যদি জিয়াদ শেখ হাসিনা বা খালেদা জিয়ার ছেলে হতো, আজ যদি জিয়াদ ন্যূনতম কোনো মন্ত্রীর ছেলে হতো, কোনো সচিবের ছেলে হতো, সেনাপ্রধানের ছেলে হতো, পুলিশ প্রধানের ছেলে হতো, বা একজন সংসদ সদস্যের ছেলে হতো, বা দলীয় কোনো রাঘববোয়ালের ছেলে হতো, তাহলে এই রাষ্ট্রের এই বিদ্যমান প্রশাসন অন্যরকম আচরণ করত। আমাদের মিডিয়া তখন অন্যভাবে এটাকে বিচার বিশ্লেষন করত। জিয়াদ যেহেতু একজন নৈশপ্রহরীর ছেলে, তা নিয়ে আর কেন এত মাতামাতি!

But, today, if Jihad had been the son of Sheikh Hasina or Khaleda Zia, or if he had been at least the son of a minister, a secretary, an army general, the police chief, a Member of the Parliament, the kingpin of one of the political parties, then this state would have acted very differently. Then the media would have analyzed the whole thing differently. But Jihad was the son of a simple night guard, so why make such a big fuss!

কিন্তু একথা সত্য, চার বছরের জিয়াদ মাত্র ২৩ ঘণ্টায় গোটা বাংলাদেশের প্রশাসন, সরকার, রাজনীতি ও দুবৃত্তায়নকে যেমন চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে সুস্পষ্ট করেছে, তেমনি সাধারণ মানুষের অন্তরে যে এত দুবৃত্তায়নের জয়জয়কারের মধ্যেও মানবিকতা কাজ করে, সেই কোটি কোটি মানুষের হুদয় জয় করেছে ছোট্ট জিয়াদ। জিয়াদের মা খাদিজা আক্তার আর বাবা নাসিরউদ্দিন হয়তো মানুষের এই সহানুভূতিকে পুঁজি করে এখন বেঁচে থাকবেন। রাষ্ট্র যেখানে ব্যর্থ সেখানে তাঁদের আর কী বা করার আছে।

But it is also true that while poor four year old Jihad has in 23 hours exposed the deep corruption of the country’s administration, government, politics, he has also shown how humanism works even in the midst of the triumph of such corruption. Jihad has conquered the hearts of millions of people of this country. It may be that it is the people’s sympathy that will enable Jihad’s mother Khajida Akhtar and father Nasiruddin to survive this ordeal. Where the country has failed them what else can they turn to?

রাষ্ট্রের দুবৃত্তায়ন ও অনিয়ম যখন সীমা লংঘন করে, তখন এমন হাজার হাজার দুর্ঘটনা ঘটার মত মৃত্যুকূপ গোটা ছাপান্ন হাজার বর্গ মাইল জুড়ে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে আছে। দলীয় লেজুড়বৃত্তি যারা করেন, দুবৃত্তায়নের সঙ্গে যারা জড়িত, অনিয়ম করে যারা কোটি টাকার আখের করছে, সেসব অবিবেচকের কাছে জিয়াদের এই মৃত্যু কোনো দায়বোধ তৈরি করবে না। কিন্তু একজন মানুষ হিসেবে যদি আপনার চিন্তা করার ক্ষমতা থাকে, আপনি যদি মানুষকে ঠিক মানুষের আসনে বিচার বিবেচনা করেন, তাহলে আপনার বিবেককে প্রশ্ন করুন, এক ছোট্ট জিয়াদ বাংলাদেশের কত অনিয়ম, কত ব্যর্থতাকে উন্মোচন করে দিল। দুর্ঘটনা ঘটার মত হাজারো ঘটনা এই রাষ্ট্রে আমরা নানাভাবে রাষ্ট্রীয় সেবায় লালন পালন করছি, চর্চা করছি, পরিচর্যা করছি, নিজেদের মৃত্যুকূপ নিজেরাই রচনা করছি, সেই বিষয়টি সুস্পষ্ট করল ছোট্ট জিয়াদ।

When the corruption and irregularity of a country crosses such limits, then one can be sure that thousands  of such death traps are  spread all over the fifty-six square miles of this country. Those who toe the party line, those who have amassed millions by corruption, to those inconsiderate souls Jihad’s death will mean very little. But if as a human being you are able to think for yourself, if you consider human beings in their rightful place, then ask your conscience this: What are the irregularities little Jihad has exposed, what failures? He has made clear how we are allowing and protecting thousands of potentially harmful accidents like this under the auspices of the government, how we are creating and nurturing our own death traps.

ছোট্ট জিয়াদ, তোমার জন্য ষোলো কোটি মানুষ একবার হলেও আহাজারি করেছে, এটাই তোমার শান্তনা। ষোলো কোটি মানুষ একটি রাত তোমার উৎকণ্ঠায় থেকেছে, এটাই তোমার পরম পাওয়া। এই রাষ্ট্রে জন্ম নিয়ে তুমি কী হতে চেয়েছিলে? একজন গরীব নৈশপ্রহরীর ঘরে জন্ম নিয়ে তোমার তো ওভাবেই দুর্ঘটনায় পড়ে অকালে মরে যাবার কথা। এই স্বীকৃতি এই রাষ্ট্র আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবেই স্বীকার করে। নইলে কোন আক্কেলে রাষ্ট্রের স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী তোমার দুর্ঘটনাকে স্রেফ গুজব বলে উদ্ধার অভিযানকে প্রভাবিত করতে পারে? তুমি কি জানো না, এই রাষ্ট্রে একজন স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী কত বড় শক্তিশালী? দোহাই, তোমার, তুমি চিরশান্তিতে ঘুমাও। এই রাষ্ট্র নিয়ে তোমার আর চিন্তা করতে হবে না, তোমার এটাই সবচেয়ে বড় শান্তি। এই রাষ্ট্রে তোমার আর না খেয়ে থাকতে হবে না, এটাই বড় শান্তি। জিয়াদ, তুমি কী জানো, এই রাষ্ট্র তোমার সেই মৃত্যুকূপে জুস পাঠিয়েছিল, আলোর জন্য টর্চলাইট পাঠিয়েছিল, ক্যামেরা পাঠিয়ে তোমাকে তন্নত্ন্ন করে খুঁজেছে, তুমি কোথায় লুকিয়েছিলে হে অভাগা?

Little Jihad, your only consolation is that one hundred and sixty million people have wept at least once for you. Your ultimate gain was that one hundred and sixty million people spent a sleepless night for you. What did you expect to be when you were born in this country? By being born into a poor night guard’s family it was your fate to die this wretched death. This is how this country officially recognizes you. Why else would the State Minister try to influence the rescue operations by trying to dismiss the accident as a rumour? Do you not know how powerful a State Minister can be in this country? Now, please, rest in eternal peace. You can be content that you don’t have to grow up to worry about this country. You can also be content that you won’t have to grow up hungry in this country. Jihad, did you know that this country sent down juice down to your death-trap, they sent down a flash light, they sent down a camera but couldn’t find you. Where were you hiding, little wretched boy?

তুমি তো মায়ের পাশে দুপুরে খাবারের পরে ঘুমিয়েছিলে। মাকে না বলে তুমি খেলতে গিয়েছিলে কেন? তোমার দস্যিপানা যে এমন দুর্ঘটনা ডেকে আনবে, তা কি তুমি জানতে না? জিয়াদ, তুমি সত্যিই বড় অভাগা। নইলে তুমি এভাবে পাইপে পরে মরতে পার না! এভাবে তুমি ২৩ ঘণ্টা গোটা বাংলাদেশের ষোলো কোটি মানুষকে উৎকণ্ঠায় রাখতে পারো না। তুমি মরে এখন বরং বেঁচে গেলে। নইলে এই রাষ্ট্রই তোমার মরার ব্যবস্থা করত। তোমার বাবাকে জেলে পুরত। তোমার মামাকে জেলে পুরত। কারণ, এই রাষ্ট্র প্রমাণ করত, তুমি পাইপের মধ্যে নেই। তুমি যে হারিয়েছ, তুমি যে গুম হয়েছ, তা প্রমাণ করতে এরা তোমার মাকেও নির্মমভাবে নির্যাতন করত। তুমি মরে গিয়ে বাকিরা এখন সবকিছু থেকে রেহাই পেল। জানো তো এই রাষ্ট্রের নাম বাংলাদেশ। এমন দেশটি তুমি আর কোথাও খুঁজে পাবে না।

You had gone to take a nap beside your mother after the midday meal. Why did you go out to play without telling your mommy? Did you not know that such naughtiness brings about misfortune? Jihad, you truly are unlucky. Otherwise you wouldn’t have died inside a pipe. Jihad, you can’t keep the whole country in such anxiety for 23 hours. But you’ve been released by your demise. Otherwise this state would have found a way to kill you. Your father would have been put in jail. Your mother too. Because the state would have tried to prove that you were not in the pipe. They wouldn’t have shied away from torturing your mother in order to prove that you’ve gone missing. By dying you’ve saved them from everything. You know that this country is called Bangladesh. And nowhere else will you be able to find a country like this.
