You Recognize Power, You Understand Petrol-Bombs – But You Recognize Not People

On one hand, BNP is saying that they are not lighting cars on fire and killing people in arson attacks. On the other hand, in an attempt to justify their ongoing blockade they are citing examples of Awami League setting fire to a bus and burning people, in 2004, in front of Hotel Sheraton. Here they are saying – BNP does not set fire – the government does! If that logic holds true, then for the 2004 attack Awami League should not be held responsible, but the onus should lie with the then BNP government. The current government may be constitutionally correct, but they came to power through an election that was ethically incorrect. Even if elections are sound, Democracy has been suffering from the very beginning. In Democracy, Accountability is as important as an election. We never found accountability; one only hopes, but to no avail. The ruling party happens to be the biggest political party also. Their hold on the three main components of the government is quite strong. While the people are not confident with the government’s integrity and morality, they do not rely on the opposition party’s political prowess either. Even if an election does take place – hypothetically speaking – people may vote the opposition party to power. But that voting will not result from a hope for change, it would rather be to teach the ruling party a lesson.

Up until the current circumstances, BNP is not likely to be able to exert the necessary pressure for the coalition government to resign. The sacrificial lamb of their arson attacks is the common people and the economy. They don’t need me to point this out for them; which means, these brutal attacks are informed, deliberate attacks. By these attacks, they are trying to intimidate people into joining the movement against the government – either you join us, or we burn some more! By imposing the moral responsibility of these killings on the government, BNP is calling for creating pressure from the so-called domestic third power. There is also a simultaneous attempt to internationally highlight the plight of the country’s internal political situation. But is there any space for moral pressure, given our political culture? I believe there is no such space, there never was. Post one-eleven, the so-called third power became quite infamous in such an attempt – and it is unlikely for that history to repeat itself. There isn’t much chance of any international endeavors either. Specially, when the US has got its hands full with the Middle East and Ukraine! Pakistani intelligence agencies, kept on their toes by their domestic terrorist threats, cannot spare time for India-Bangladesh relations. BNP is not likely to get in the good-books of India if they keep their ties with Jamaat. Since historically BNP was known for campaigning against the Awami League for the latter’s pro-India policies, there is no strong argument why India should suddenly push aside Awami League and embrace BNP.

The only path that remains for BNP is to initiate a mass movement. By bringing millions of party workers and supporters to the streets, they have to disregard government instructions and shut down roads, offices and businesses. Only by gathering a mass, can BNP startle the police, RAB and BGB, and scare off the Awami League party workers. The government will have no choice but to step down. BNP needs to take to the streets with the moral resolve of self-sacrifice, if need be. The government will collapse, there will be no need to set people on fire. Win the battle to take the throne. The votes will follow. You can wipe off the liberation war itself – taking with it the process of trials of war-criminals. Instead of pillars, build a second Padma bridge. Not only can you fly the flag on the car of a collaborator, you can also make him President, who will receive Independence Day salutes – we will endure that also but please, just don’t burn us anymore.

Can you do that, madam? Please do so, if you can. Otherwise, please go home and sleep. Wake up each afternoon and call meetings of your central committee every midnight, followed by press releases the next morning – please go back to doing that. Please don’t burn us.

ক্ষমতা চিনলেন, পেট্রোল বোমা চিনলেন- মানুষ চিনলেন না!

একদিকে বিএনপি বলার চেষ্টা করছে গাড়িতে আগুন দিয়ে তারা মানুষ পোড়াচ্ছেনা। অন্যদিকে চলমান আন্দলোনের অংশ হিসেবে আগুন দেওয়ার জাস্টিফিকেশন হিসেবে, ২০০৪ সালে আওয়ামীলীগ কর্তৃক শেরাটনের সামনে বাসে আগুন দিয়ে মানুষ পোড়ানোর উদাহারন তুলে ধরছে! একদিকে বলছে- বিরোধি দল আগুন দেয়না; দেয় সরকার! এই যুক্তিতে ২০০৪ সালের বিরোধিদল আওয়ামীলীগকে দায়ি না করে তৎকালীন সরকারি দল, বিএনপির উপর দায়ভার চাপাতে হয়! আমি মানি সরকার কন্স্টিটিউশনালি কারেক্ট হলেও, ইথিকালি রং একটা নির্বাচন করে ক্ষমতায় আছে। গনতন্ত্রের প্রাণ ভোঁমরা হল নির্বাচন- সেটা সুস্থ না হলে, গনততন্ত্র অসুস্থ্য হয়। আমাদের দেশের গনতন্ত্র অসুস্থ্য অবস্থায় শয্যাশায়ী! তবে সঠিক নর্বাচনে ক্ষমতা বদল হলেও, আমাদের দেশের গনতন্ত্র- শুরু থেকে অসুস্থ্য!

জবাবদিহিতা গনতন্ত্রে ঠিক নির্বাচনের মতই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। সেটা কোনদিন আমরা পাইনি- সহসা পাব বলে- সে আশাও রাখিনা। বর্তমান ক্ষমতাসীন দল, দেশের সব’চে বড় রাজনৈতিক দলও বটে । সরকারের প্রধান তিন অংগের উপর এদের গ্রীপ এখনো বেশ মজবুত। সরকারের সততা ও নৈতিকতার উপর আস্থা না থাকলেও, দেশের বিরোধি রাজনৈতিক শক্তির উপর ও দেশের জনগনের আস্থা নেই। এখনো যদি ভোট হয়- মানে হাইপোথিটেক্যলি বললে, মানুষ হয়ত বিরোধি দলকে ভোট দিয়ে ক্ষমতায় নিয়ে আসবে। কিন্তু সে ভোট দেওয়া, কোন আশা বা আকাংখার বহিঃপ্রকাশ হবেনা। সেটা হবে- ক্ষমতাসীনদের কৃতকর্মের জন্য শায়েস্তা করার একটা উপায়।

অবস্থাদৃষ্টে আজ পর্যন্ত যা মনে হচ্ছে- আপাতত বল বা শক্তি প্রয়োগ করে বিএনপি জোট সরকারকে পদত্যাগে বাধ্য করতে পারছে না। তাদের গাড়ি ও মানুষ পোড়ানোর সন্ত্রাসের একমাত্র বলি এদেশের সাধারন মানুষ ও অর্থনীতি। সেটা যে বিরোধি দলের বুঝার ক্ষমতা নেই- সেটা বলার মত নির্বোধ আমি নই! তার মানে, তারা বুঝে শুনেই এই পাশবিক সন্ত্রাস চালাচ্ছে! তারা মানুষের উপর আঘাত করে- সে মানুষদের বুঝানোর চেষ্টা করছে; আমাদের সাথে রাস্তায় নাম- না হলে আমরা আরো পোড়াব! অন্যদিকে, সরকারের উপর মানুষ হত্যার নৈতিক দায় চাপিয়ে দেশের অভ্যন্তরের তথাকথিত ৩য় শক্তিকে সরকারের উপর চাপ সৃষ্টি করতে বাধ্য করা, এবং সাথে বিশ্বসভায় দেশের রাজনৈতিক দুরাবস্থার চিত্র তুলে ধরার প্রয়াস আছে। কিন্তু আমাদের রাজনীতির যে সংস্কৃতি- তাতে কি এই নৈতিক চাপের কোন স্থান আছে? আমার বিশ্বাস- এটি নেই; কোনদিন এখানে ছিলনা।

দেশের তথাকথিত ৩য় শক্তি ওয়ান ইলেভেনের পর একবার সে চেষ্টা করে বিপুল দূর্নামের ভাগি হয়েছে- তারা আপাতত সেপথ মাড়াবে বলে মনে হয়না। আন্তর্জাতিক কোন প্রচেষ্টা এই মহূর্তে বাংলাদেশকে নিয়ে সহসা হবে বলেও মনে হয় না। বিশেষ করে- আমেরিকা এখন মধ্যপ্রাচ্য এবং ইউক্রেন নিয়ে ব্যাস্ত! পাকিস্তানের গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা, নিজের দেশে সন্ত্রাস নিয়ে নাকানি চুবানি খাচ্ছে; ভারত-বাংলাদেশ সম্পর্ক নিয়ে মাথা ঘামানোর অবস্থা তাদের নেই! বিএনপি, জামাতের সাথে সখ্য অটুট রেখে ভারতের বিশ্বস্ততা অর্জনে সফল হবে বলে মনে হয়না। তাছাড়া যেহেতু ঐতিহাসিক ভাবে আওয়ামীলীগের সাথে ভারতকে জড়িয়ে, বাংলাদেশে আওয়ামী ও ভারত বিরোধি রাজনীতি করাই এতদিন বি এন পি’র ব্রেড এ্যান্ড বাটার ছিল – হঠাৎ করে ভারত বি এন পি’কে বুকে টেনে আওয়ামীলীগকে বকে দেবে- সেমনটা ভাবার কোন জোড়াল যুক্তি দেখতে পাচ্ছি না।

বি এন পির একমাত্র উপায় এখন বিশাল গনআন্দোলন গড়ে তুলা। মানে লাখ লাখ কর্মী সমর্থককে রাজ পথে নামিয়ে এনে, সরকারি বাধা নিষেধ অমান্য করে রাস্তা ঘাট, অফিস আদালত, ব্যাবসা প্রতিষ্ঠান বন্ধ করে দেওয়া। এতে করে, মানুষের জমায়েত দেখে পুলিশ, র্যাব, বিজিবি ভড়কে যাবে, আওয়ামীলীগের সাপোর্টার ও কর্মীরা ভয়ে গা ঢাকা দেবে। সরকার পদত্যাগ করতে বাধ্য হবে। বি এন পি’র নেতা কর্মিদের প্রয়োজনে রাজপথে প্রান দেওয়ার মত নৈতিক শক্তি নিয়েই মাঠে নামতে হবে। সরকার এমনিতেই পড়ে যাবে- আম জনতাকে আগুন দিয়ে পোড়ানোর প্রয়োজন পড়বে না! যুদ্ধ জয় করে মসনদের দখল নিন। ভোট আমরা দিয়ে দেব। যুদ্ধাপরাধিদের বিচার তো দূরে থাক- মুক্তি যুদ্ধকে ও গায়েব করে দিয়েন। খাম্বার বদলে, ২য় পদ্মাব্রীজ নিয়েন। রাজাকারের গাড়িতে জাতিয় পতাকা শুধুনা- রাষ্ট্রপতি বানিয়ে ২৬শে মার্চের কুচকাওয়াজের সালাম গ্রহন করিয়েন- দাঁতে দাঁত চেপে সহ্য করে নেব। কিন্তু আমাদের আর আগুনে পুড়িয়েন না!

পারবেন কি ম্যাডাম? যদি পারেন, করেন! নচেৎ বাড়ি গিয়ে ঘুমিয়ে থাকেন। রোজ বিকেলে ঘুম থেকে উঠে, মাঝ রাতে যেমন স্থায়ী কমিটির মিটিং ডেকে- পরদিন প্রেস রিলিজ দেওয়াতেন, তাই করতে থাকুন! আমাদের পোড়াবেন না প্লীজ!
