Doctors Cafe: I saw a Medical student shouting for a trolley while carrying a wounded woman in his lap. We are not butchers, listen o countrymen. Today the way the Enam Medical College students were working tirelessly to save people is beyond comparison. Salute to you all! You proved today that Doctors are not butchers or dacoits.
Rubana Huq: Just got back from Savaar. Media cameras were providing light as there were hardly torches; victims trapped inside were gasping for breath and sending chits asking for oxygen and water.
Few bodies were pulled out, no hands or legs. More than 300 maybe still inside. If any of you want to donate blood, going to Pongu hospital is not necessary. I went there and there are only 9 patients there. And there are at least 100 kids waiting to donate blood. There were regular people dragging the victims out. They looked as helpless as many of us, but at least they had courage. Two guys in green went in to drill a hole in the wall, but the pace was pathetic. Rescue operation is not running at full speed. As always, there’s damage control taking precedence over our conscience and real action.
Never thought there would ever be a day when we would be ashamed to introduce ourselves as garment manufacturers. Today however is the day. I forgot to recite: inna lillah at the site, possibly because proximity of a tragedy and sin often numbs and kills the spirit.

Lets ask today, since Tazreen fire, what our government, civil society, youth movements and left political parties ( whose natural constituency should have been workers rights) did to prevent a repeat disaster?
Anu Muhammad: মানুষের পাশে মানুষ দাঁড়িয়েছে। হাত বাড়িয়ে তুলছে নিহত আহত মানুষদের। রক্ত দিতে হাজির আরও অনেকে। মানুষের স্বতস্ফ’র্ত এই ভূমিকা না থাকলে পরিস্থিতি আরও খারাপ হতো। কিন্তু যেসব প্রতিষ্ঠানের দায়িত্ব এগুলো তাদের হাতে প্রয়োজনের তুলনায় যন্ত্রপাতি কম, জনবল কম। গাড়ি কেনার টাকা থাকে, কারখানা পরিদর্শক, ফায়ার ব্রিগেড শক্তিশালী করায় টাকা থাকে না। জমি দখল হয়, বেআইনীভাবে ভবন উঠে যায়। একদিকে সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানের নাজুক অবস্থা, অক্ষমতা, দুর্নীতি আর অন্যদিকে মালিকদের সীমাহীন লোভ লালসা আর যথেচ্ছাচারের ক্ষমতাই এই হত্যাকান্ড ঘটিয়েছে। ভবনে ফাটল দেখা দেবার পরও জোর করে অনিচ্ছুক শ্রমিকদের কারখানায় ঢুকিয়ে গেট আটকে দেয়া হল। জীবন্ত কবর হল কত নারীপুরুষের তা হয়তো কখনোই জানা যাবে না। স্পেকট্রাম ভবনের ধ্বস, তাজরীনে আগুনে ছাই, রানা কমপ্লেক্সে আবারো ধ্বস। খুনি মালিক ও তার দোসর সরকারি কর্মকর্তাদের ক্ষমতা অবাধ, তাদের কোনো শাস্তি নাই। চারমাস হয়ে গেলো, তাজরীনের পুড়ে যাওয়া শ্রমিকদের এখনও সবার খোঁজ মেলে নাই। ঘোষিত ক্ষতিপূরণও পায় নাই বেশিরভাগ। যে মানুষেরা ডলারের পাহাড় তৈরি করে তাদের জন্য তার কারখানাই এখন মরণের ঘর। ডলারের মজুদের নীচে চাপা পড়া মানুষ, এই দেশ!
Sanjan Haque: How many more Savar-type tragedies will it take for the government to enforce building codes, regulations and BGMEA to kick out members failing to live up to the codes? We should all lobby the high street stores to ask for higher standards for workers and factories where they source their products. The factory owners need to be hurt where it will cause the most pain, their pockets. This is so frustrating.
Tusher Nabi Khan: আজ বুক ভেঙ্গে কান্না আসছে…আজকের এই ঘটনাটাকে দুর্ঘটনা বলা যাবেনা। এটা হত্যা। গতকাল এই বিল্ডিং ব্যাবহারের অনুপযোগী ঘোষণার পর আজ যাদের নির্দেশে গার্মেন্টস খোলা হয়েছিলো- তারাই হত্যাকারী। সরকার এবং বিরোধীদল এর সদস্যদের পায়ে ধরে অনুরোধ করছি- “আজকে মরাকান্না কাঁদবেন না, পারলে সহায়তা করুন, বক্তৃতা, দোষারোপ, হরতাল ইত্যাদির জন্য অনেক সময় পাবেন। আজকের দিনটায় আপনাদের মুখগুলো বন্ধ রাখুন। আমি কোন তদন্ত কমিটির কথা শুনতে চাইনা, কোন আল্টিমেটাম এর কথা শুনতে চাইনা আজ।
Anjan Roy: যে লোকটি সংবাদমাধ্যমকে বলেছিলেন, “সামান্য একটু প্লাস্টার খুলে পড়েছে। এটা তেমন কিছু নয়।” যে লোকটির এবং তার ভাড়াটেদের বিষয়ে শিল্প পুলিশের পরিচালক মুস্তাফিজুর রহমান ঘটনাস্থলে সাংবাদিকদের বলেছেন, “গতকাল যখন ফাটল দেখা গেল তখনই শিল্প পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে বলা হয়েছিল যেন কারখানা বন্ধ রাখা হয়। আমরা বলেছিলাম, বুয়েট থেকে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার এসে পরীক্ষা করার পর কারখানা খোলা যাবে কি না জানানো হবে। কিন্তু শিল্প পুলিশের নির্দেশ উপেক্ষা করে মালিকদের একক সিদ্ধান্তে বুধবার সকালে তারা কারখানা খুলে দেয়।” ন্যায় বিচারের প্রথম শর্ত এই লোকগুলোকে গ্রেফতার করা। ভবন মালিক মো. সোহেল রানা যদি আহতও হয়, তবু তাকে এই মুহূর্তে গ্রেফতার করতে হবে। তার রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় যাদি তাকে রক্ষা করে, তাহলে সেটি হবে সবচে বড় লজ্জার ঘটনা। একই সাথে গ্রেফতার করতে হবে খোলা রাখা কারখানার মালিকদের। কারন আহত অবস্থায় উদ্ধার হওয়া অনেক শ্রমিকই বলেছেন, সকালে ফাটল ধরা ভবনে কাজে যোগ দিতে তাদের বাধ্য করা হয়।ওরা খুনের সহায়তা করবে, আর নাগরিকেরা মানবিক সহায়তায় হাত বাড়াবে- এই প্র্যাকটিস বন্ধ করতেই হবে। মানবিক সহায়তার সাথে সাথেই এই খুনের সহায়কদের গ্রেফতার দেখতে চাই।

It was a moment when the state of politics and vulnerability as far as who matters and who doesn’t in Bangladesh was made clear to all. When the Rana Plaza collapsed, the owner , a local AL bigwig managed to escape unhurt after being rescued by the local MP, but hundreds of poor workers were killed and many more still trapped under the rubble. Nothing could be more symbolic. The Rana Plaza was owned by a person who is a local kingpin of the ruling party and how such a person came to own such wealth is another matter but there is no confusion that he could build a death trap with impunity. He was told by the engineers that this building was not stable at all and had developed cracks which pointed to a major fault in the structure. He swished away the observations saying that they were ‘just cracks in the concrete’. The garments factory owners with over 6000 workers were also told to shut the factories down as the building was unsafe. Nobody bothered and the very next day, the building collapsed.
