Remembering Humayun Faridi

Humayun Faridi (29 May 1952 — 13 February 2012)

I met Humayun Faridi at the end of 1975, on the bank of the Jahangirnagar University’s lake. It did not take long to develop friendship with frank, unconventional and straight talker Faridi. At the university we had no distinction between chatter, discussion, debate and work. Back then there weren’t so many things on the campus. It had Julaphur canteen, Alaberanani Hall canteen, Dairy Farm, Ali-bhai’s store at the gate, residential halls or the department’s open space area. We gathered on these places for our main work – chatter – and creativity.

We heard about Faridi’s acting talent early on. But I had not had an opportunity to watch a performance yet. Discussions on plays dominated our discussions. We talked about history of traditional Bengali folk-plays, writing about them, movies, novels, poems, stories, and love. Not less on politics and economics.

We turned our attention to economics classes during the examination period. Together, we prepared for the exam. Big adda with many, still, attracted us in examination time. I heard his recitals – of poems, dialogues from movies or folk-plays. Day and night, sitting on the edge of the lake or strolling along it. His life-story was interesting, diverse, dramatic and drama-centric. Different characters made him think; creativity attracted him.

Any obstacles on the way made him ponder, delved him into political economic thoughts. Along with other friends, we put our claims to the teachers, undertook economic studies. We published the ‘Sironam (translated as The Tittle)’ in cyclostyle. Established a library. Organised regular talks and seminars. At one stage, we formed the writers –ganayatra group (a play ensemble). A big program was organised involving Hemanga Bishwash. We knew, very well, that he did not think of anything else beyond plays and drama-related arts in life.

I have not seen such commitment, dedication and love for drama in anyone else. By the time we were getting out of the University Faridi was very popular, famous and important personality in the drama/play scene. In cinema, too, Faridi became very popular quickly. As though, the expectation that most of the people had about Faridi went unfulfilled. But whatever they had got made him inerasable.

His death was as dramatic as his life – dramatic. Departure at the beginning of Basanata (spring).

Today, I found a photo that I had lost a little while ago. Along with Faridi and my other friend Monju, this photo was taken in 1978, our university student days.

Though unclear, I put it up here for everyone.

হুমায়ুন ফরীদির সঙ্গে আমার পরিচয় ১৯৭৫-এর শেষে৷ জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের লেকের পাড়ে৷ কথাবার্তা চলাফেরায় প্রচলিত নিয়মনীতির বাইরে স্পষ্টভাষী ফরীদির সাথে ঘনিষ্ঠতা তৈরি হতে আমার দেরী হয়নি৷ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আমাদের আড্ডা, আলোচনা, বির্তক আর কাজের মধ্যে কোন ভাগ ছিল না৷ তখন ক্যাম্পাসে এতসবকিছু ছিলো না৷ জুলফুর ক্যান্টিন, আলবেরম্নণী হল ক্যান্টিন, ডেইরী ফার্ম গেটে আলীভাইএর দোকান, হল বা বিভাগের খোলা জায়গা এগুলোই ছিল আমাদের প্রধান কর্ম-আড্ডা-সৃজনশীলতার সমাবেশস্থল৷

প্রথমদিকেই ফরীদির অভিনয় প্রতিভার কথা শুনেছি৷ কিন্তু প্রত্যক্ষ করবার সুযোগ তখনও হয়নি৷ ওর সাথে কথাবার্তার একটা বড় অংশ জুড়ে থাকতো নাটক নিয়ে কথা, বাংলার পালা যাত্রার ঐতিহ্য, সেগুলো নিয়ে লেখালেখির কথা, চলচ্চিত্রের কথা, কবিতা গল্প বা উপন্যাস, প্রেম৷ রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি নিয়েও কম নয়৷

পরীক্ষার সময় ক্লাশের অর্থশাস্ত্র নিয়ে মনোযোগ বাড়ে, একসঙ্গেই পরীক্ষার প্রস্তুতি নেই৷ যত কম সময়ে নেয়া সম্ভব৷ পরীক্ষার সময়ও দলেবলে আড্ডা আমাদের অন্যতম আকর্ষণ৷ ওর কন্ঠে আবৃত্তি শুনি, যাত্রার কিংবা নাটকের কিংবা চলচ্চিত্রের সংলাপ শুনি৷ গানও৷ রাতে দিনে, লেকের পারে, বসে, কিংবা হাঁটতে হাঁটতে৷ ওর জীবন কাহিনী বৈচিত্রময়; নাটকীয় এবং নাটককেন্দ্রিক৷ বিভিন্ন মানবচরিত্র তাকে ভাবায়, সৃজনশীলতা তাকে আকর্ষণ করে৷

এর পথে নানা বাধা ওকে রাজনীতি অর্থনীতি চিনত্মায় টানে৷ আমরা একসঙ্গে আরও বন্ধুদের নিয়ে বিভাগে শিক্ষকদের কাছে দাবীদাওয়া জানাই, ইকনমিক স্টাডি গ্রম্নপ করি৷ সাইক্লোস্টাইল করে ‘শিরোনাম’ পত্রিকা বের করি৷ গ্রন্থাগার প্রতিষ্ঠা করি৷ নিয়মিত পাঠচক্র, সেমিনার করি৷ একপর্যায়ে লেখক শিবির গণনাট্যদলও করি৷ হেমাঙ্গ বিশ্বাসকে নিয়ে বড় অনুষ্ঠান হয়৷ নাটক, নাটককেন্দ্রিক শিল্পচর্চা ছাড়া জীবনে আর কোন কিছু যে ওর চিন্তায় ছিল না- সেটা আমি খুব ভালভাবেই বুঝতাম৷

নাটকের প্রতি ফরীদির যে নিষ্ঠা, একাগ্রতা এবং ভালবাসা তা আর কোনকিছু বা কারও প্রতি দেখি নি৷ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বের হতে হতে ফরীদি অসম্ভব জনপ্রিয় জননন্দিত এবং গুরম্নত্বপূর্ণ নাট্যব্যক্তিত্বে পরিণত হয়েছিল৷ চলচ্চিত্রেও ফরীদি খুব দ্রম্নত জনপ্রিয় হয়ে ওঠে৷ যে প্রত্যাশা

ফরীদিকে ঘিরে মানুষের তৈরি হয়েছিল তার বেশিরভাগ যেন অপূর্ণই থেকে গেল৷ কিন্তু যতটুকু মানুষ পেলো তাতেই ও হয়ে থাকলো অক্ষয়৷

জীবন যেমন মৃতু্যও তেমনি৷ নাটকীয়৷ বসনত্মের প্রথম বেলায় বিদায়৷

আজ একটু আগেই হারিয়ে যাওয়া একটা ছবি পেলাম। ফরিদীসহ এই ছবিটা 1978 সালের, আমাদের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্রজীবনের, আরেকজন মঞ্জু।

অষ্পষ্ট হলেও ছবিটা সবার জন্য এখানে তুলে রাখলাম।
