Young poet Mahmud Hasan died yesterday. He was a Philosophy student at Dhaka University. At his funeral, his parents made one request of his friends: please collect all his writings and publish them, so his memory can be honored. We are publishing Mahmud’s last poem, written two days before his tragic death. Translated by Naseef Amin.

Horror of demise in eternity

Reaching out for eternity brings the horror of demise
Owls across the horizon obscure the shift of day and night
They hold no eagerness for gobbling rats
Merely spread out shadows of Milky Way into my head
And they want to lose me …… lose me into the Milky Way
I, too, want to lose them keeping mind upon their minds
Don’t want to dredge any flow
If it flows unceasing……

In my way there’s neither light of stars
Nor they finely appear.
Sun is one and they are many
Rather than being loud, no words come out of me.
Now being amazed, I walk silent
Down to the Milky Way made by owls
And being cocooned into the cuddle of stars
I want to hold the emptiness

All within my hands……

অনন্তে পৌছুতে পৌছুতে অন্তের ভয় এসে জুড়ে
আদিগন্ত ছড়ানো হুতোম প্যাঁচারা দিন রাত্রির ব্যবধান ভোলে
ইদুরের ভোজ উৎসবে তাহাদের মন নেই
কেবল আমার মস্তকে ছায়া ফেলে ছায়াপথ গড়ে
আমারে হারাবার চায়…ছায়াপথে হারাবার চায়…
আমি ও হারাতে চাই তাহাদের মনে মন রেখে হারাবার চাই
খুড়িতে চাহি না আর কোন নদী
যদি বহে নিরবধি…

আমার যাত্রাপথে তারাদের আলো নেই তারা ভালো নেই
সুর্য এক তাহারা অনেক
আমি স্ববাক হওয়ার বদলে অবাক
হতবাক মনে নির্বাক হয়ে
প্যাচাদের গড়ে দেয়া ছায়া পথে হেটে
তারাদের কোলে মাথা রেখে দু হাতে শুন্যতা ধরি রাখিবার চাই…
