Khaleda Zia has once again taken to the streets. But does she know what lies at the end of the road? She holds the reins to a massive storm. If she lets go, will she be able to contain the storm and weather it herself?
Exerting force only becomes an option when all peaceful arrangements for maintaining and transferring political power are exhausted. Hartals, destruction, repression, and emergencies become inevitable. If the opposition is responsible for such chaos, they will free the government of all obligations to hold independent elections, and allow them to choose one-sided elections. Whether this occurs in the name of preserving democracy or maintaining due process, circumstances may favor those in power. Is this what Khaleda Zia wants?
Cloudy waters yield no reflection. They say that a donkey can’t see his face in the water because he makes the water cloudy. The jot–mohajot has made the state, politics, and society so cloudy that it is now an ideal playing field for clever hunters. One should look at their own reflection. Political society has split in two; each blames the other without any truth or logic. Each is so disgusted by the other that they will bow down to foreign powers but push aside their Bangladeshi brothers like dogs. So much disgust can prevent one from knowing another. Nor can they know their own self. Continuing this blame game will further divide the country; Bangladesh will cease to exist. Only a divided and destroyed reality will remain.
Of 16 crore people, only one-one and half lakh are party-blind supporters of this hatred. However, they are the ones that control politics. Voters of the two parties live as neighbors in the villages. Party workers from different parties exist within the same family. Irrigation waters have to travel over BNP-supporters’ lands to AL-supporters’ lands. Businessmen operate through completely party-free arrangements for the sake of profit. It is only the politicians who repeatedly prove themselves incapable of such cooperation.
The face of our politics resembles the Greek mythological creature Centaur – half man, half animal. The more the upper half of politics speaks of the Liberation War, Islam, nationalism, and development, the more its lower half establishes the practice of dynastic politics, corruption, and the use of force. This dynastic political system accumulates power with corrupt practices. It operates by giving party members a part of this accumulated wealth, speaking of ideals to the middle classes, and tricking the larger population. It doesn’t exclude anyone unless it has to. It’s members don’t know the weight of power, of wealth.
Any political party should aim to unite. A leader’s charisma lies in the ability to steer most of the people in his direction. However, the ideals and objectives of Bangladesh’s two leading parties are to divide and rule. This divided nationalism will not benefit the country and destroy the political consciousness of vast number of people. This division is as harmful as expired medicine. But such politics continues in the absence of an alternative. The mere existence of politics creates followers. But the way that political leaders attack each other creates an impression that each is haram for the other. What will they do to the crores of people that support the other party? Set them afloat in the Bay of Bengal?
Most people supported the war crimes trials and independent caretaker government. But the two parties have made these issues so contested that the country is now divided on these very premises. Both parties are responsible for this division. If they want a compromise, they have to make decisions: the trials will continue and elections will be held under independent oversight. And if they come to an understanding, no one will be able to bring a third force to power.
If we want a solution, this violence and expression of hatred has to stop. Does it not reflect on the government when public gatherings are restricted? If hartals are a threat, then what does one make of the government’s response? Both parties have to take the reins. If Khaleda Zia wants the support of the people, she has to find another route. The road that leads to the people is always open. But this path cannot be taken with sticks, oars, da-kural. Those are not weapons of resistance. They are weapons that terrorize. She as to figure out how to create a mass uprising. And for that, she has to reach out ot the people, and especially, to the youth. She has to prove that she can protect this country and its possibilities. The more she moves towards using force, the more she has to draw on terrorizers. In return, the government will call on the police-BGB-Jubo League cadres. The ruling party has a bigger advantage here. They will have the law on their side, the opposition not so much. The latter would have, if BNP had the ability to create a mass uprising. But Hasina is not Egypt’s Mubarak and Khaleda Zia is not Morsi.
As time elapses, more of the paths are closing. Kurigram’s landless Majed Ali has been driving a rickshaw in Dhaka for two years. He is 75. Three of his daughters are married. One son goes to high school, another is in college. His wife is suffering from cancer. He provides her with medical care despite being aware that she will not survive. He gives each son Tk. 200 every day, knowing that he will not live to enjoy their earnings. He pays rent for their slum housing and puts food on the table. He expects nothing from anybody. Sitting on his rickshaw, I see his white tupi, white Panjabi, a namaji urni slung over his shoulder. His light beard waving in the wind by the sodium light, he looks a little like an angel. His back bends over with age and exertion. He is weak, but argues with bribe-taking police in the middle of the night on my account. I come home and he returns to the streets. He has no choice.
Respected prime minister and opposition leader, old Majed Ali does not have the option to stop working in spite of the fact that death knocks at his door. Losing a day’s wage could halt his sons’ education or medical care for his dying wife. I haven’t had a dearth of good people come my way. Majed Ali is one of them. Even now, as I close my eyes, I see him driving his rickshaw with tightly closed wrists over the handle and a bent-over back. His urni blows in the wind. He feeds his family with his self-respect and confidence, can you at least show that level of responsibility? Whatever you do, remember that Bangladesh is weighed down with problems just like this old man. We don’t have the luxury of rest. We have no friends in this world to rely on.
With every hartal, every police action, I see sticks falling on Majed Ali’s back. His back bends more and more in the direction of the ground. But the man is still unable to stop. He is propelled forward by his wife’s medical needs, his son’s education, and not having to beg for as long as he lives. Crores of Majed Alis are carrying this country on their backs in Bangladesh and abroad. Leaders, you have options. The Majed Alis of Bangladesh don’t. They will not stop, so please, you must!

পথের শেষ কোথায়?
খালেদা জিয়া আবার পথে নেমেছেন। কিন্তু পথের শেষে কী আছে, তিনি কি তা জানেন? মসনদের পথ খাদের দিকেও আগায়। তাঁর হাতের মুঠিতে বড় ঝড়ের লাগাম। লাগাম ছেড়ে দিলেই তুফান বয়ে যাবে; তা সামলিয়ে তিনিও দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে পারবেন তো? ঝড়ের লাগাম কখনো ছাড়তে নেই।
আলোচনার মায়ার খেলা অচিরেই ফুরাবে; তখনই সামনে আসবে আপস অথবা বলপ্রয়োগের প্রশ্ন। আপসের পথেসংবিধান, ফর্মুলা ইত্যাদির অজুহাত দিলে পুরান ঢাকার ঘোড়াগুলোও হাসবে। আপসে দুই পক্ষই জেতে, দুই পক্ষই হারে। সে রকম ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ আপস না হলে বলপ্রয়োগই ভরসা। সরকার তার সব বাহিনী, প্রতিষ্ঠান আর কলকবজা বিরোধীদের দমনে লাগাবে। বিরোধীদলও জ্বালাও-পোড়াও পথে সরকারকে অকার্যকর করতে চাইবে। দুটোই জনগণকে রাজনীতির মাঠ থেকে খেদিয়ে রাখার কৌশল। জনহীন রাজপথে জননিরাপত্তার নামে বলপ্রয়োগের সুযোগ হাতছাড়া করবে না সরকার। বিরোধীদলীয় নেত্রী কি সেই সুযোগটাই সরকারের হাতে সেধে তুলে দিতে চান? নাকি চান অন্য কোনো শক্তির বলপ্রয়োগ?
ক্ষমতা চালানো ও ক্ষমতা বদলের সব শান্তিপূর্ণ আয়োজন যখন নস্যাৎ হয়, তখনই বলপ্রয়োগের মৌসুম আসে। হরতাল-নাশকতা, দমন-পীড়ন জরুরি অবস্থা তখন অনিবার্য। বিরোধী দলের কর্মসূচির ফলে যদি তেমন অকাল আসে, তাহলে সরকার নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন আয়োজনের বাধ্যবাধকতা মুক্ত হয়ে নেমে পড়বে একদলীয় নির্বাচনে। গণতন্ত্র রক্ষার নামেই হোক আর নিয়মতান্ত্রিক ধারাবাহিকতার কথা বলেই হোক, সহিংস পরিস্থিতি ক্ষমতাসীনদেরই পক্ষে যেতে পারে। খালেদা জিয়া সেটাই চান?
ঘোলা পানিতে প্রতিবিম্ব পড়ে না। পানি বেশি ঘোলা করে ফেলে বলে গাধা কখনো নিজের মুখ দেখতে পারে না। রাষ্ট্র, রাজনীতি ও সংস্কৃতিকে দুই জোট-মহাজোট এতই ঘোলা করে ফেলেছে, এই জল এখন চতুর শিকারিদের আদর্শ ক্ষেত্র। তার পরও সবারই নিজেদের মুখ দেখে নেওয়া উচিত। রাজনৈতিক সমাজ দুই শিবিরে ভাগ হয়ে সত্য ও যুক্তি বিসর্জন দিয়ে পরস্পরকে দোষাচ্ছে। পরস্পরের প্রতি এতই ঘৃণা তাদের, পারলে তারা বিদেশি ঠাকুরের খেদমত করবে কিন্তু দেশি ভাইকে ‘কুকুরের’ মতো দূর দূর করে। আমি যদি আপনাকে ঘৃণায় অন্ধ হই, তাহলেআপনাকে আমি আর জানতে পারব না। নিজেকেও না। এই দোষাদুষির কুস্তি যত চলবে, ততই বিভাজন বাড়বে, বাংলাদেশ বলে আর কিছু থাকবে না। থাকবে শুধু লীগ আর দলে বিভক্ত ছারখার বাস্তবতা।
গুণ নয় দোষই সংক্রামক। ১৬ কোটি মানুষের মধ্যে মাত্র এক দেড় লাখ মানুষ দলকানা ও ঘৃণার পূজারি। অথচ রাজনীতির জলবায়ু এঁরাই নিয়ন্ত্রণ করছেন। পাড়া-গ্রামে দুই দলের ভোটাররা প্রতিবেশীর মতোই বাস করেন। এক পরিবারেই পাওয়া যাবে দুই ভিন্ন দলের নেতা-কর্মী। সেচের পানি বিএনপিপন্থীর জমির ওপর দিয়েই লীগপন্থীর জমিতে যায়। ব্যবসায়ীরা মুনাফার খাতিরে সম্পূর্ণদলনিরপেক্ষ বন্দোবস্ত করে রেখেছেন। রাজনীতিবিদেরাই কেবল বারেবারেঅযোগ্যতার প্রমাণরাখছেন। তাঁদের ইন্ধন দিতে মুখিয়েআছে কিছু কুদুলে বুদ্ধিজীবী আর আলুপোড়া খেতে আগ্রহী কিছু সুযোগসন্ধানী।
আমাদের রাজনীতির চেহারাটা গ্রিক উপকথার প্রাণী সেন্টরের মতো অর্ধেকটা মানবিক অর্ধেকটা পাশবিক। রাজনীতির ওপরের চেহারাটায় যতই মুক্তিযুদ্ধ, ইসলাম, জাতীয়তাবাদ, উন্নয়নের বুলি থাকুক, নিচের দিকে তা পরিবারতন্ত্র, দুর্নীতি, বলপ্রয়োগ ও গণবৈরিতার চতুষ্পদে প্রতিষ্ঠিত। এই পরিবারতন্ত্র দুর্নীতির মাধ্যমে অর্জিত বিত্ত দিয়ে বলপ্রয়োগের ক্ষমতা বানায়। দলের লোকদের দুর্নীতির ভাগ, মধ্যবিত্তকে আদর্শের লজেঞ্চুস আর বৃহত্তর জনতাকে ধোঁকা দিয়েএই রাজনীতি চলে। বাধ্য না হলে এই রাজনীতি কাউকে ছাড় দেয় না। ক্ষমতার বণ্টন, সম্পদের বণ্টন এই রাজনীতি জানে না।
জাতীয় ঐক্য সৃষ্টি করাই যেকোনো রাজনৈতিক দলের লক্ষ্য হওয়ার কথা। নিজের পক্ষে বেশির ভাগ মানুষকে নিয়ে আসাই নেতার ক্যারিশমা। অথচ বাংলাদেশের দুটি বড় দলের আদর্শ ও কর্মসূচির লক্ষ্যহলো ভাগ করো, শাসন করো। দুই উগ্র জাতীয়তাবাদ দেশের কাজে না এলেও, বিপুলসংখ্যক মানুষের চেতনানাশে ওস্তাদ। মেয়াদ ফুরানো ওষুধের মতো এসব আজ বিপজ্জনক। তার পরও বিকল্পেরঅভাবে এই রাজনীতি ও এর সমর্থন আরও কিছুদিন থাকবে। রাজনীতি থাকলে তাদের সমর্থকও থাকবে দেশে। অথচ নেতা-নেত্রীরা যেভাবে পরস্পরকে আক্রমণ করেন, তাতে মনে হয় এক পক্ষের কাছে অন্য পক্ষ হারাম। দুই দলের পক্ষে থাকা কোটি কোটি মানুষকে তাঁরা কী করবেন? বঙ্গোপসাগরে ভাসিয়েদেবেন?
যুদ্ধাপরাধের বিচার আর নির্দলীয় তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের দাবি অধিকাংশ মানুষের সমর্থন পেয়েছিল। কিন্তু দুই দল দুই ইস্যুকেই বিতর্কিত করে দেশকে বিভক্ত করতে কামিয়াব হয়েছে। এর দায় দুই পক্ষেরই। সমঝোতা চাইলে উভয় পক্ষকে সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হবে: বিচারও চলবে, নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচনও হবে। আর দুই দল যদি সমঝোতায় আসে, কারও সাধ্য নেই ‘তৃতীয়’কাউকে ক্ষমতায় আনে।
মীমাংসা চাইলে এই মুহূর্তে সহিংসতা আর ঘৃণার প্রকাশ থামাতে হবে। সভা-সমাবেশ নিষিদ্ধের আদেশ কি সরকার-সমর্থকদের ওপর খাটে না? হরতাল যদি উসকানি হয়, হরতাল ঠেকানোর কর্মসূচি কি বরযাত্রা? উভয় পক্ষকেই ঘোড়া সামলাতে হবে। দেশবাসীর সমর্থন চাইলে খালেদা জিয়াকেও বিকল্প পথ বের করতে হবে। মানুষের কাছে যাওয়ার পথ সব সময়ই খোলা। লগি-বইঠা-দা-কুড়াল হাতে করে সেটা হয় না। এগুলো প্রতিবাদের অস্ত্র নয়, সন্ত্রাসের অস্ত্র। এর বাইরে ব্যাপক গণ-অসহযোগ কিংবা গণজাগরণের জন্য তিনি আর কী করতে পারেন, তা তাঁকেই ভাবতে হবে। গণজাগরণ চাইলে যেতে হবে মানুষের কাছে, তরুণ-তরুণীদের কাছে। তাদের কাছে নিজেকে দেশের সম্ভাবনার জিম্মাদার প্রমাণ করতে হবে। তা না করে যতই পাল্টা বলপ্রয়োগের পথে যাবেন, ততই তাঁকে নির্ভর করতে হবে সন্ত্রাসী শক্তির ওপর। বিপরীতে সরকার নির্ভর করবে পুলিশ-বিজিবি-র্যাব ও লীগের ক্যাডারদের ওপর। সরকারের সুবিধাই এখানে বেশি। সরকারপক্ষ পাবে আইনের আশ্রয়, বিরোধী পক্ষের তেমন আশ্রয় নেই। থাকত, যদি বিএনপি গণ-অভ্যুত্থান ঘটানোর সামর্থ্যরাখত। কিন্তু শেখ হাসিনা মিসরের মোবারক নন, খালেদা জিয়াও নন ক্ষমতাচ্যুত মোহাম্মদ মুরসি।
কিন্তু দিন যাচ্ছে আর পথ আটকে যাচ্ছে। কুড়িগ্রামের ভূমিহীন মাজেদ আলী ঢাকায় রিকশা চালান দুই বছর ধরে। বয়স ৭৫। তিন মেয়ের বিয়ে দিয়েছেন, এক ছেলে হাইস্কুলে, আরেক ছেলে কলেজে পড়ে। স্ত্রী জরায়ু ক্যানসারে ধুঁকছেন। বাঁচবে না জেনেও চিকিৎসা চালাচ্ছেন, ছেলেদের কামাই খাওয়ার আগেই আয়ু ফুরাবে জেনেও দুই ছেলেকে প্রতিদিন ২০০ টাকা খরচ দেন। বস্তির ঘরভাড়া দেন, নিজে খান, বউকে খাওয়ান। কারও কাছে তাঁর কোনো আশা নেই। তাঁর রিকশায় বসে পেছন থেকে দেখি, সাদা টুপি, সাদা পাঞ্জাবি, ঘাড়ের ওপর ফেলে রাখা নামাজি উড়নি, বাতাসে ওড়া পাতলা দাড়িতে সোডিয়াম আলোয় তাঁকে দেবদূতের মতো লাগে। বয়স আর মেহনত তাঁর পিঠ বাঁকিয়ে দিয়েছে। কত দুর্বলমানুষ, অথচ মধ্যরাতে আমার সমর্থনে ঘুষখোর পুলিশের সঙ্গে তর্ক করেন। তারপর আমি বাড়ি ফিরি, তিনি আবার নামেন রাস্তায়। না নেমে উপায়নেই।
মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও মাননীয় বিরোধীদলীয় নেতা, মৃত্যুর দোরগোড়ায় দাঁড়িয়েও বৃদ্ধ মাজেদ আলীর থামার উপায়নেই। এক দিনের কামাই নষ্ট হওয়া মানে ছেলেদের পড়ালেখা বন্ধ থাকা, মৃত্যুপথযাত্রী স্ত্রীকে অনাহারি রাখা। জীবনে সুন্দর মনের মানুষ একেবারে কম দেখিনি। মাজেদ আলী তাঁদের একজন। এখনো চোখ বন্ধ করলে দেখতে পাই, রিকশার হাতলে দুই মুঠি শক্ত করে ঘাড়-পিঠ উবু করে তিনি পথ চলছেন। বাতাসে উড়ছে তাঁর উড়নি। যে আত্মমর্যাদা আর আত্মবিশ্বাস নিয়ে সংসার চালাচ্ছেন, সেটুকু দায়িত্বশীলতা আপনারা দেখাবেন কি? আপনারা যা-ই করেন, মনে রাখবেন বাংলাদেশও সমস্যার ভারে নুয়েআসা ওই বৃদ্ধের মতো। আমাদেরও থামবার সুযোগ নেই, আমাদেরও ভরসা করার বন্ধু নেই পৃথিবীতে।
প্রতিটি হরতাল, প্রতিটি পুলিশি অ্যাকশনে, আমি দেখতে পাই মাজেদ আলীর পিঠে বাড়ি পড়ছে। মাটির দিকে আরও নুয়েযাচ্ছে তাঁর পিঠ; তবু লোকটা থামতে পারছেন না। বউয়ের চিকিৎসা, ছেলেদের পড়ালেখা চালানো আর জীবনের বাকি কটা দিন ভিক্ষা না করার অসীম জেদের কারণেই মাজেদ আলী থামবেন না। বাংলাদেশের কোটি কোটি মাজেদ আলী দেশের মাটিতে বা বিদেশবিভুঁইয়ে দেশটাকে পিঠে করে বয়ে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। মাননীয়গণ, আপনাদের অনেক উপায় আছে, মাজেদ আলীদের নেই। ওরা থামবে না, দয়া করে আপনারাই থামুন।
