Their money-choked eyes and brains refuse to see

The Sundarbans are alive. It is home to a diverse wildlife. Some are seen; others exist out of our sight. It is like a grand life itself that includes the big and the small, the mobile and the sedentary.  Those dedicated to saving this grand life are also, no doubt, very alive. Ignoring the scorching sun, the downpours, the oppressive heat, and the open skies, the vibrant protests during September 24-28, 2013 flowed like a river that turned into a human ocean as it came closer to the grand life that are the Sundarbans. Women, men, young, and old took to the streets. Life met with life, aided by music, drama, and slogans. Many of those who could not make it to the Long March expressed their allegiances in a number of ways. The majority of the life force of the Long March was the youth. Those groups that seek profit by introducing drugs to this generation, who turn the youth into criminals to expedite their own looting and plundering, and try to make self-centered consumers out of young people are daunted by the fire of these protesting youth. The former’s money-choked eyes and brains refuse to comprehend the urge that harnesses this unstoppable life force. They fail to understand why people risk lives to join a war of independence.

Neither on October 22^nd, as declared, nor even in Rampal, but according to news sources, next Saturday, the Prime Minister is going to lay the foundation of the Rampal Power Plant from Bheramara in Kushtia, 250 km away from the Sundarbans! The government became a laughing stock as it got scared and tried to fool the people. This is what they call an ideological defeat. Tough luck! Can one establish a power plant with a remote control? The people of Bangladesh won’t let this happen. This foundation-stone will merely symbolize the fraudulence and the anti-national activities of this government. And this will only strengthen the popular sentiments against the destruction of the Sundarbans. In case this ridiculous and fraudulent activity does take place, there will be protests at 4pm on Saturday at the Press Club in Dhaka as well as all the other areas covered in the Long March across Bangladesh.

A familiar trend brings up a few questions. Since October 5, 2013, The Bangla daily, Prothom Alo failed to publish three news items of the National Committee. The protests on the day of the remote control-foundation of the power plant, the press conference of October 8, and the country-wide protests on October 9 remained unreported. This is hardly the first time that this has happened. Except for the Long March, a number of activities of the National Committee in the last one year were ignored by the daily. It’s not that the news didn’t get to them. Some online reportage hinted that the news writers had submitted their reports; although later they were not to be found. Newspapers have their rights to prioritize and take a position. The readers equally have the right to express their opinion or ask questions. Like others, the press also needs to be accountable, especially when it comes to a daily like Prothom Alo that boasts the largest readership in the country, one that has created expectations due to its socially responsible journalism in some other areas.

The massive rally and the historical resistance that violated the Section 144 invoked by the government then allied with Asia Energy (GCM) in Phulbari in 2006 was not covered either in Prothom Alo. The company is still floating shares at the London Stock Exchange on the basis of the wealth of coal in northern Bangladesh. A small percentage of that profit is being distributed locally to support ministers, bureaucrats, consultants, journalists, and one ad agency. A press release of that company was published in the same daily without any accompanying assessment or critique. The news of the resistance against these kinds of conspiracies were, however, not reported.

In the last year, Prothom Alo has failed to publish news of the discussions, press releases, events, and actions organized by the National Committee and various experts that engaged with or critiqued the Rampal power plant as it did with the various other contracts regarding offshore gas exploration in the Bay of Bengal with the help of the Production Sharing Contract 2012. When reading about the Long March, many people have naturally raised the question about why the National Committee hadn’t bothered about any of this before. Our question is, is this all due to the editorial decisions of Prothom Alo?

The same way bdnews24, the most widely-read online news source in Bangladesh, seemed reluctant to publish reports on the Long March and other resistance-related news, although they have been particularly enthusiastic about posting an Indian minister’s interview with the headline, “Rampal will be Clean.” One can surmise that their editorial position is for the power plant, and that they are interested in garnering public support for it. They appear unconcerned about the destruction of the Sundarbans. Nor do they seem interested in highlighting the ongoing protests despite people’s interest in them. And what about Prothom Alo? Does the news of the arguments, information, and popular demands against the destruction of the Sundarbans, the evil treaties around offshore licensing of the Bay of Bengal, and the coal conspiracies not have any value, or is there not adequate room for this kind of reportage? Or could it be that there are people inside the newspaper who are active as emissaries of the looters and the plunderers?

While wishing the people of Bangladesh a happy Eid and Durgapuja, we also urge them to voice the slogan of saving the Sundarbans at Eid jamaats and Puja mandaps. Along with participating in the festivities at home, please create public support for national interests in saving the Sundarbans. We urge all scientists, artists, writers, journalists, workers, farmers, women, and men to participate, in their respective capacities, to play a role in the interest of the nation. From our schools, colleges, universities, factories, offices, courts, homes, and vehicles, we shall participate in protecting the Sundarbans from being sacrificed to our profit motives for the sake of our own existence. For this we seek the active participation of people from all quarters of society.

Ignoring both local and international expert opinions as well as the demands and desires of the people of Bangladesh, the two Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh lay the foundation of a power plant that could only be protested through a hartal. This was the only fitting response to address the grievances and anger of those who aligned themselves with the movement and participated in the days-long Long March in scorching sun and pouring rains.  Although we understand that daily life of the people of this country was interrupted due to this strike, we believe that they would still observe it for their own collective welfare. While organizing immediate events in protest, we have refrained from announcing further activities before Eid and Puja for the sake of public interest. However, we would like to categorically announce at today’s press conference that a project that will destroy the Sundarbans, the safety belt of Bangladesh, will not be supported by the people of this country. If need be, we shall keep on continuing with our protest programs.

We had the opportunity to visit a few open pit and coal-fired power plants in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh in India. We also got a chance to see the conditions of those who have been relocated – repeatedly – for generations. Employment, housing, medical care, even drinking water are hard to procure. At many places we saw burning flames in various parts of the mines, belching smoke like a volcano although the coal had already been extracted. Standing in that poisonous smoke was an eight-year-old girl carrying her one-year-old brother just to seek out some warmth in the cold. Not only in the mining zone but well beyond the mines, many have lost opportunities to work due to the loss of agricultural land. “There will be work at the mines,” has always been the usual refrain. Instead, the land was lost, a handful got jobs at the mines, and there was no industrialization. Now they live on a mountain of debris and in the midst of crates full of ash from the thermal power plant. Finding drinking water is the most acute problem across all the towns. The mines and the power plant areas are full of sick, malnourished, and hungry people. There are a few mansions scattered across as well as police and criminal activities. The people, relocated and defrauded, are scathed by health and water crises. Any activities from the people and the police and the mafia get active. In Singrauli, the largest coal-fired power plant under NTPC Limited (formally, National Thermal Power Corporation), we tasted a bit of it ourselves. Sudarshan was kidnapped; Shaktiprasad was tortured at the police station a couple of days back. Abhidesh, a local organizer for over three decades, described the situation as being far worse than a state of emergency. The devastating situation that we encountered in the hilly, sparsely populated region in India made us all the more scared of the terrible fate that awaits the riverine, fertile, and densely populated areas of Bangladesh. What terrible situation Bangladesh avoided because of the collective sacrifices of the people of Phulbari and the adjacent areas! The struggle against the dominance of the politics of plunder is not over. There are ongoing struggles in different parts of India. The Sundarbans are calling for a movement on both sides. We met with politicians, writers, experts, environmentalists, journalists, and teachers in Delhi and Kolkata. They are also aligning themselves with the analyses, protests, and resistances of the people of Bangladesh against the joint project of destruction carried out by the two governments. Movements are being organized there as well. A collective resistance to save the Sundarbans will open new horizons in popular protests against capitalistic aggression in the region. It will create a new language of development and politics.

তাদের টাকা ভরা চোখ আর মগজ বুঝতে অক্ষম

সুন্দরবন খুবই জীবন্ত, এখানে অসংখ্য প্রাণের বাস। তাদের অনেককে চোখে দেখা যায়, অনেককে যায় না। ছোট বড়, সচল স্থির, দৃশ্যমান অদৃশ্য সবাইকে নিয়ে সুন্দরবন এক মহাপ্রাণ। মহাপ্রাণ রক্ষায় শামিল মানুষেরাও তাই খুব জীবন্ত। ২৪ থেকে ২৮ সেপ্টেম্বর প্রখর রোদ, মুষলধারে বৃষ্টি, প্রচন্ড গরম, অর্ধাহার, আকাশের নীচে আশ্রয় সবকিছু নিয়ে এই জীবন্ত প্রতিরোধ, সুন্দরবনের নদীর মতোই বাঁকে বাঁকে বড় হয়ে জনসমুদ্রে পরিণত হয়েছে মহাপ্রাণের কাছে এসে। সেখানকার অসংখ্য নারীপুরুষ শিশু বৃদ্ধ প্রাণের স্বতস্ফূর্ততা নিয়ে রাস্তায় দাঁড়িয়েছেন। গানে, নাটকে, শ্লোগানে প্রাণে প্রাণ মিলেছে। আরও বহু মানুষ লংমার্চে যেতে না পারলেও দূর থেকে নানাভাবে একাত্ন হয়েছে। লংমার্চের প্রাণবন্ত মিছিলের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠই তরুণ। যারা তরুণদের মাদকাসক্ত বানিয়ে মুনাফা বানাতে চায়, যারা তরুণদের সন্ত্রাসী বানিয়ে দখল আর লুন্ঠনের রাস্তা পরিষ্কার করতে চায়, যারা তরুণদের আত্নকেন্দ্রিক ভোগী বানিয়ে বাজার তৈরি করতে চায় তারা তরুণদের এই রূপের আগুন দেখে ভীতসন্ত্রস্ত। তাদের টাকা ভরা চোখ আর মগজ বুঝতে অক্ষম কিসের তাড়নায় মানুষের এই অপ্রতিরোধ্য সজীবতা তৈরি হয়! তারা বুঝতে অক্ষম, মানুষ কেনো জীবন তুচ্ছ করে মুক্তিযুদ্ধে যায়!!

পূর্ব ঘোষণা অনুযায়ী 22 অক্টোবর নয়, রামপালে গিয়েও নয়, খবর বলছে: আগামীকাল শনিবার প্রধানমন্ত্রী কুষ্টিয়ার ভেড়ামারায় বসে সেখান থেকে প্রায় 250 কিমি দূরের বৃহত্তর সুন্দরবনের রামপালে তাপ বিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্পের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করবেন! জনগণের ভয়ে ভীতসন্ত্রস্ত হয়ে চালাকি করতে গিয়ে নিজেদের চরম হাস্যাস্পদ করছে সরকার। এটাকেই বলে নৈতিক পরাজয়! কোন লাভ নাই। রিমোট প্রযুক্তি দিয়ে কি রামপাল তাপ বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করা যাবে? এই কেন্দ্র জনগণ হতে দেবে না। শুধু এই ’প্রস্তর’ সরকারের প্রতারণা ও জাতীয় স্বার্থবিরোধী তৎপরতার চিহ্ন হয়ে থাকবে। আর এতে সুন্দরবন ধ্বংসের বিরুদ্ধে জনপ্রতিরোধ আরও জোরদারই হবে কেবল। এই হাস্যকর প্রতারণামূলক জাতীয় স্বার্থ বিরোধী ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপনের ঘটনা ঘটলে তার প্রতিবাদে তাৎক্ষণিক প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে শনিবার ঢাকায় জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবের সামনে বিকাল সাড়ে ৪ টায় এবং লংমার্চের সকল এলাকাসহ সারাদেশে বিক্ষোভ কর্মসূচি।

বারবার একই ঘটনা ঘটায় কিছু প্রশ্ন মাথায় আসছে। গত ৫ অক্টোবর থেকে জাতীয় কমিটির পরপর তিনটি খবর প্রথম আলো প্রকাশ করেনি। একই দিন প্রধানমন্ত্রীর রিমোট কন্ট্রোল ভিত্তিফলক উন্মোচনের তাৎক্ষণিক প্রতিবাদ সমাবেশ, ৮ অক্টোবর সাংবাদিক সম্মেলন এবং ৯ অক্টোবর দেশব্যাপী বিক্ষোভ কর্মসূচি কোনটিই নয়। এরকম ঘটনা এটাই প্রথম নয়। লং মার্চ বাদ দিলে গত একবছরে বহু কর্মসূচির খবরই প্রথম আলো প্রকাশ করেনি। ঘটনা এমন নয় যে, এসব খবর প্রথম আলোতে পৌঁছায়নি। কখনও কখনও অনলাইনে কিছু সময় খবর দেখে বোঝা গেছে সংবাদদাতারা রিপোর্ট জমা দিয়েছেন। পরে আর সেগুলো দেখা যায়নি। সংবাদপত্রের স্বাধীনতা আছে তার অগ্রাধিকার ও অবস্থান নির্ধারণের। পাঠকদেরও অধিকার আছে তা নিয়ে নিজেদের মতামত বা বক্তব্য প্রকাশের বা প্রশ্ন তোলার। অন্য সবার মতো সংবাদ মাধ্যমেরও জবাবদিহিতার ব্যাপার আছে। বিশেষত তা যদি প্রথম আলোর মতো সর্বাধিক প্রচারিত সংবাদপত্র হয়, যা অন্য অনেক ক্ষেত্রে দায়িত্বশীল ভূমিকার মাধ্যমে সমাজে প্রত্যাশা তৈরি করেছে।
এশিয়া এনার্জির (জিসিএম) পক্ষে সরকারের ১৪৪ ধারা ভেঙ্গে ফুলবাড়ীতে হাজার হাজার মানুষের সমাবেশ, ঐতিহাসিক জনপ্রতিরোধের ফুলবাড়ী দিবসের বড় কর্মসূচির খবর প্রথম আলোতে ছাপা হয়নি। বাংলাদেশের কয়লাসম্পদ দেখিয়ে এই জালিয়াত কোম্পানি এখনও লন্ডনে বেআইনী শেয়ার ব্যবসা করছে, সেই মুনাফার কিছু অংশ ছিটিয়ে এখানে মন্ত্রী, আমলা, কনসালট্যান্ট, কয়েকজন সাংবাদিক, একটি বিজ্ঞাপনী সংস্থা ব্যবহার করছে। লুটেরা রাজনীতিবিদ, মাদকসেবী আর সন্ত্রাসীদের নিয়ে বিরামপুর পার্বতীপুরে চক্রান্ত চালাচ্ছে। সেই কোম্পানির প্রেস রিলিজ কোন পর্যালোচনা ছাড়া বিশেষ রিপোর্ট আকারে প্রথম আলোতে প্রকাশিত হতে দেখেছি। এসব চক্রান্তের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদের খবর ছাপা হয়নি।

গত একবছরে রামপাল, পিএসসি- ২০১২র মাধ্যমে বঙ্গোপসাগরে জাতীয় বিনাশী নানা চুক্তির আয়োজন নিয়ে জাতীয় কমিটির বা বিশেষজ্ঞ আলোচনা, বক্তব্য, বিবৃতি, কর্মসূচির অনেক খবরও জায়গা পায়নি। রামপাল লংমার্চের খবর দেখে তাই কেউ কেউ প্রশ্ন তুলছেন, জাতীয় কমিটি এসব বিষয় আগে কথা বলেনি কেন? আমাদের প্রশ্ন, এগুলো কি প্রথম আলোর সম্পাদকীয় সিদ্ধান্ত থেকে হচ্ছে?

যেমন সর্বাধিক পঠিত অনলাইন পত্রিকা বিডিনিউজ একদিকে লংমার্চসহ রামপাল বিষয়ে প্রতিবাদের খবর প্রকাশে খুবই কুন্ঠিত দেখা যাচ্ছে, অন্যদিকে খুব গুরুত্ব দিয়ে কয়েকদিন ধরে ভারতীয় মন্ত্রীর সাক্ষাৎকার ‘রামপাল উইল বি ক্লিন’ শিরোনাম দিয়ে ঝুলিয়ে রাখছে। এতে ধারণা হয় তাদের সম্পাদকীয় অবস্থান এই বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রের পক্ষে, এবং তারজন্য জনমত তৈরি করতে তারা আগ্রহী। মনে হচ্ছে, সুন্দরবন ধ্বংস নিয়ে তাদের দুশ্চিন্তা নেই বা তারা এবিষয়ে প্রতিবাদ তা যতই জনসমর্থন পাক তাকে গুরুত্ব দিতে মোটেই ইচ্ছুক নয়। প্রথম আলো-র ক্ষেত্রে কী? তাদের কাছে কি সুন্দরবন ধ্বংস, বঙ্গোপসাগরের সম্পদ নিয়ে ভয়াবহ চুক্তি বা কয়লা সম্পদ নিয়ে জালিয়াতদের চক্রান্ত ইত্যাদির বিরুদ্ধে যুক্তি, তথ্য, জনপ্রতিবাদের সংবাদ মূল্য কম না এসব খবরের জন্য জায়গার অভাব হচ্ছে? নাকি দখলদার লুটেরাদের হাত হিসেবে পত্রিকার ভেতরেই জন প্রতিবাদের খবর খুন করতে কেউ কেউ বিশেষভাবে সক্রিয়?

’দেশবাসীকে ঈদ ও পূজার শুভেচ্ছা জানানোর সাথে সাথে আহবান জানাই ঈদের জামাতে ও পূজার মন্ডপে সুন্দরবন রক্ষার দাবি উচ্চারণ করুন। ঘরে ঘরে আনন্দ উৎসবের মধ্যে সুন্দরবন রক্ষাসহ জাতীয় স্বার্থের পক্ষে জনমত তৈরি করুন। বিজ্ঞানী, শিল্পী, লেখক, সাংবাদিক, পেশাজীবী, শ্রমিক কৃষক নারীপুরুষ সবার প্রতি আমাদের আহবান নিজ নিজ জায়গা থেকে আপনারা প্রকৃত মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনায় সুন্দরবনসহ জাতীয় স্বার্থের পক্ষে নিজ নিজ ভূমিকা পালন করুন। আমরা স্কুল, কলেজ, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, কারখানা, অফিস আদালতসহ ঘরে ঘরে যানবাহনে আমাদের অস্তিত্বের অংশ সুন্দরবন রক্ষার পক্ষে জনপ্রতিরোধ তৈরি করেই সুন্দরবনকে লোভের বলি হওয়া থেকে রক্ষা করবো। এই কাজে আমরা সকল পর্যায়ের মানুষের সক্রিয় অংশগ্রহণ কামনা করি।’

’দেশি বিদেশি বিশেজ্ঞদের মতামত, সারা দেশের মানুষের দাবি ও আকুতিকে অগ্রাহ্য করে, যেভাবে দুই দেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশকে অরক্ষিত করবার এই প্রকল্পের ভিত্তি ফলক স্থাপন করলেন তার প্রতিবাদের জন্য হরতালই ছিল উপযুক্ত জবাব। রোদে পুড়ে, বৃষ্টিতে ভিজে, দিনের পর দিন লংমার্চে যারা অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন, অসংখ্য মানুষ যারা এই আন্দোলনে একাত্ন হয়েছেন, তাঁদের ক্ষোভ ও ধিক্কার প্রকাশে সেটাই যথাযথ ছিলো। আমরা জানি, সারা দেশের মানুষ জনস্বার্থবিরোধী হরতালে বিপর্যস্ত থাকলেও, নিজেদের সামষ্টিক স্বার্থে, সুন্দরবন রক্ষায় ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে ঠিকই হরতাল পালন করবেন। কিন্তু তাৎক্ষণিক প্রতিবাদ ও বিক্ষোভ কর্মসূচি পালন করলেও আমরা ঈদ ও পূজার প্রাক্কালে জনগণের সমস্যার কথা বিবেচনা করে হরতালের কর্মসূচি দেই নি। কিন্তু আজকের এই সংবাদ সম্মেলনের মাধ্যমে আমরা স্পষ্টভাবে জানাতে চাই যে, বাংলাদেশের রক্ষাবাঁধ সুন্দরবনের ধ্বংস হয় এরকম প্রকল্প বাংলাদেশের মানুষ কোনভাবেই হতে দেবে না, প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী আমাদের কর্মসূচিও তাই অব্যাহত থাকবে।’
